About the Lion Monument in Lucerne
This monument, built to honor the Swiss Guards, was dedicated in 1821. It was sculpted by Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen. The Swiss have a long standing tradition of lending mercenaries to other countries. The Swiss are known for trustworthiness and holing to their agreements. This has helped them remain politically neutral. The sad lion is shown dieing, resting on his shield with a broken spear in him. ![]() View More Pictures |
